history.

2006. In the beginning, b.Marcell started a company called Urban Gurl Companies, LLC.  Under that umbrella was a company called Prominence Promotions.  Prominence Promotions was designed to house an all girls entertainment street marketing team.  b.Marcell appointed Shatara Hook as the original Street Team Executive Marketing Director.  However, after a striking encounter from God, b.Marcell knew that she had to change the direction of this platform, providing more of a substance to the young women she would have influence over.  Keisha Shelton, Jewels' first Branch Director, worked tirelessly to help create the foundation of our beloved organization.  The first interest meeting for Prominence Promotions / UGC Jewels was held on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, at Howard University in Douglas Hall, room 310 with our 7 inaugural members.

2007. Under the leadership of b.Marcell, the Jewels began to meet weekly.  Jewels helped develop workshops and the core standards that would soon become tradition including the official colors of Jewels, Inc., purple and teal and the Jewels Enrichment Program motto, "More Than A Lady, Always A Jewel".  The Enrichment Program of Jewels, Inc., was founded on Thursday, January 11, 2007.  The first official Jewels, Inc., Meeting was held on Wednesday, January 24, 2007.  By the end of the year, Jewels, Inc., rose tremendously in numbers, as so many young ladies were interested in changing the lives of the youth.  It wasn't long before Jewels established the very first mentee site at the Columbia Heights Youth Club in Washington, DC.

A life dedicated to serving children is in Dr. Elinor F. Hancock’s genetic makeup.  Stricken with Type I diabetes at the age of 13, Dr. Hancock found motivation behind the illness and used it to propel her 37-year career in medicine.  Dr. Hancock worked at St. Louis Comprehensive Healthcare Foundation and Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation before starting a practice in East St. Louis, IL.  She was determined to build a business based on the principle of providing quality healthcare to low-income and Medicaid patients.  She achieved this goal with the establishment of Florissant Pediatrics, Inc., where she practiced from 1984-2019.

Dr. Hancock graduated with department honors in chemistry from Fisk University, then completed medical school at Meharry Medical College where she got her M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and completed her residency.  She also completed a fellowship program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

She has been members of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, medical staff, Cardinal Glennon Hospital medical staff, Christian Hospital medical staff, SSM Managed Care Group, the American Academy of Pediatrics, America Medical Association, just to name a few.

Dr. Hancock graduated from Meharry in 1980 and represents the 3rd of 4 generations in her family to graduate from Meharry and to serve the St. Louis Metropolitan and surrounding areas.  Hancock Ave. in Berkley, MO., was named after her grandfather, Dr. Clifford Hancock.

Dr. Hancock is presently a member of the Archway(MO) Chapter of the Links Inc., and Jewels, Inc., a mentorship enrichment program founded at Howard University by her younger daughter, b.Marcell Williams.  She devotes a lot of time volunteering and giving free services to her patients.

She has been blessed with 5 grandchildren Jadyn, Peter, Brielle, Blake, and Brandon.
